Minerva Grey is an alias, a pen name, an online persona. Minerva is, well was, a cat, my companion and familiar for the better part of 18 years. Grey is the multi-shaded middle ground between black and white. Besides, I like the way it sounds.
She was named after the Roman goddess of wisdom, justice, handicrafts (such as spinning), and war. Minerva’s talismans are the owl and books, hence the owl part of minervasowl. Once upon a time, I had a daydream of owning a bookshop and naming it Minerva’s Owl Books.
I use an alias online because I am old enough to remember when being online meant listervs and message boards, and the cardinal rule was that you never used your real name. Therefore, I put everything in the cat’s name and have a fraught and suspicious relationship with social media platforms.
I started keeping a journal after reading Harriet the Spy in the second or third grade and have done so of and on with varying levels of enthusiasm and consistency ever since.
For the most part I write for my own amusement and\or sanity, but sometimes if feels like it would be fun to share, and so this blog exists.
I love reading, writing, and language. I also love numbers and math. I knit, spin, and weave with yarn, mostly wool. I love water — rain, rivers, lakes, the ocean.
I moderate comments to avoid spam and to head off any vitriol which might appear. People don’t have to agree with or like what I have to say, but there is no reason to respond with hostility, rudeness or belligerence. This is my little corner of the internet. All are welcome who welcome all and who play nicely.
I am rather a fan of John Scalzi’s comment policy.
Thank you for reading!!
